Factopia

Privacy Policy

Covers the Factopia app for iPhone, its widget, and this website.

The short version: Factopia has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. The cards you like, your streak, your coins and everything else you do in the app stay on your iPhone. The one thing you write that leaves the device is a topic you type into Ask AI: it goes to Google's Gemini model so it can write facts about it, and it is not linked to you.

Who we are

Factopia is an independent app, built and run by Ihor Malovanyi, a sole trader established in Ukraine. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. For anything in it, including a request to see or delete your data, write to factopia@ihor.pro.

The terms you agree to when you use the app are separate, and are linked from the app's menu.

The app

What stays on your iPhone

The cards you have seen, liked and saved, your collections, streak and daily goal, your coins, the themes you own, your game results and your settings are kept in the app's own storage on your device. The Fact of the Day widget reads them from the app's private shared container on the same device. None of this is synced through iCloud or sent to us. It is included in your device backups according to your iOS backup settings, and deleting the app deletes it.

Reminders are local notifications, scheduled on your iPhone if you allow them; the app uses no push server. "Tell me a fact with Factopia" in Siri and Shortcuts is answered on the device, from the facts already in the app.

Ask AI and Tell Me More

When you ask for facts about a topic, the topic is sent to Google's Gemini model through Google Firebase (Firebase AI Logic). While you type, the letters typed so far are sent the same way, so the app can suggest topics. Tell Me More sends the text of the card you are on and the title of its source. Nothing else goes with these requests: not your name, email address, contacts, location or advertising identifier. The app says this before your first AI request.

Google processes these requests for us as a data processor. Factopia uses the paid Gemini API, and under its terms Google does not use the prompts or the responses to improve its products, and logs them for a limited period only to detect and prevent abuse and for legal requirements. Please don't type personal information into a topic.

The facts AI writes are made on the spot, are not checked by us, and can be wrong.

What the app downloads

The app downloads new facts from Firebase Realtime Database, its settings (such as the seasonal fact sets and the price of a theme) from Firebase Remote Config, and theme pictures from Firebase Storage. These requests only read; like any request on the internet, they show the server your IP address, and Firebase's requests also carry the app and system version.

The photos on the back of the cards come from Wikimedia Commons and are loaded straight from Wikimedia's servers, which see your IP address as any website does. That is covered by the Wikimedia Foundation Privacy Policy.

Keeping the service genuine

So that nobody else can use Factopia's AI and database with copied keys, the app uses Firebase App Check, which asks Apple's App Attest to confirm that a request comes from a real copy of Factopia on a real Apple device. Firebase also gives each installation of the app a random installation ID, used to deliver settings to it, and its components send Google limited technical diagnostics (such as how a request performed). None of this identifies you, and we do not link it to you.

Purchases

Factopia Premium is sold by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card details or your Apple Account. The app checks your subscription on the device, and the sales reports Apple gives us do not identify you.

Writing to us and reporting a fact

Contact and Report This Fact open your email app with a message addressed to us. A report fills in the card's text, its number (or, for an AI card, the topic it was written for) and the app version; you can read and change all of it, and nothing is sent until you press Send. When you write, we receive your email address and what you wrote. We use it only to answer you and to fix the card, and keep it only as long as that takes.

Sharing

Share hands a picture of the card, its photo, and a link to Factopia on the App Store to the app you choose. That is entirely your action, and we receive nothing from it.

Ads, accounts and tracking

The app shows no advertising and has no accounts. It does not track you across other apps or websites, does not ask for your device's advertising identifier, does not build a profile about you, and we sell no data. Its App Store privacy label lists two kinds of data, neither linked to you: the topics you type (Other User Content) and Firebase's diagnostics (Other Diagnostic Data).

Who handles the data

The facts database is stored in Belgium (Google's europe-west1 region). Google may process the other data in the United States and in other countries where it has facilities. Transfers outside the EEA, the UK and Ukraine are covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses in Google's data processing terms, and by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, under which Google is certified.

How long data is kept

What stays on your iPhone is kept until you delete it or the app. AI requests are logged by Google for a limited period, as described above. Installation IDs and diagnostics are kept by Firebase on its own schedule, set out in its privacy page. Emails are kept only as long as it takes to answer them and fix what they report.

Legal basis (EU, EEA and UK)

We send an AI request because you asked for it: it is needed to provide the feature (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)). App Check, installation IDs and diagnostics rest on our legitimate interest in keeping the app secure and working (Art. 6(1)(f)), and so does answering the emails you send us.

Your rights

You can ask to access, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you, object to its processing, or receive a copy of it. Because Factopia has no accounts, almost everything lives on your own iPhone, where deleting the app removes it; for anything else, write to factopia@ihor.pro. If you are in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you may also complain to your data protection authority.

California residents (CCPA/CPRA). The only personal information involved is internet and network activity (the requests described above, including IP addresses seen by the services that answer them) and, if you write to us, your email address. We do not sell or share personal information, do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.

Children

Factopia is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. The app asks for no name, email address or other detail that could identify anyone. If you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, write to us and we will delete it.

This website

This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics, fonts or scripts from anyone else. GitHub, which hosts it, may keep standard server logs (IP address, time, page requested) for security; we do not use them to identify anyone.
